Running is one of the number one exercises that people enjoy doing to not only stay in shape but to stay healthy and live longer. While it can be a great cardio workout, it also has its downsides as well. There can be frequent injuries and serious wear and tear on your joints when you run on a daily basis. This can leave runners looking for ways to still do what they love and avoid injuring themselves. Metropolitan Pools is here to talk about the benefits that come with running in a pool rather than on land.
What are the Advantages of Running in Water?
There are several reasons that running in a pool can be incredibly beneficial. Following are a few of them.
– Injury Recovery: If you have suffered an injury and still want to get a good workout without re-injuring yourself, running in a pool can be the best way to do it. There can be a lot of downtime that comes with injury recovery that can lead to losing the stamina that you worked so hard to build up. When you continue to train in a pool rather than running on land, you will see that you don’t lose all that you worked for, and your body can still recover since it is so much easier on your joints and body.
– Reduced Impact: When running outside, every time you take a step, there is an incredible amount of force that is vibrating throughout your body from the impact of your feet on the pavement. Running in a pool can all but eliminate that. The water will carry up to 90% of your body weight and reduce the impact on your whole body as you run. If you suffer from arthritis, osteoporosis or are pregnant, running in a pool can be a fantastic workout.
– Muscle Engagement: There is a great deal of water resistance you experience as you run in the water. When running on land, you will mostly be getting a lower body workout. In the water, you will engage muscles found in your back, arms and your abdomen.
– Resistance: Even though the water reduces the stress on your legs and joints, there is resistance that you can use to get a better workout in the water. The added resistance is similar to running in a staunch wind and will increase your heartrate. With an increased heartrate, you will end up burning more calories. A land runner usually burns about 8 calories per minute, and you can burn up to 11.5 calories per minute in the pool.
