There is nothing like a refreshing dip in the pool on a hot summer day. When you are lucky enough to have a pool in your backyard, it can be a regular occurrence for you. However, when you have your own pool, it is important that you are keeping it properly maintained so that you don’t run into problems like green algae that can get in the way of that refreshing swim. Metropolitan Pools is here to talk about what needs to be done to get rid of green algae in your pool.
Steps to Get Rid of Green Algae in Your Pool
No one wants to see a green, swampy looking pool in their backyard. If your pool has started to look a little green rather than blue, follow these steps to get rid of the algae:
– 1. Clean the Pool: The first thing that needs to be done when there are green algae in the swimming pool is to clean it out. Cleaning your pool is something that should be done on a daily basis to avoid this problem in the first place, but when you notice green, it is definitely time. You can clean it by vacuuming out the bottom of the pool. A heavy duty cleaning might need to be done with a soft brush that is vinyl-friendly.
– 2. Replace Some Water: You never want to completely drain a vinyl pool. However, you can drain up to ½ of the water out of the pool and avoid a shrinking problem. As the pool starts to drain, you can use a soft bristle brush and a hose to clean up the walls as they become more exposed. Once you have gotten it cleaned well, you can start to add more water again.
– 3. Balance the Water: You don’t need to add any chemicals to the water until you know that you have removed all of the algae. You want to make sure that the pool is at least 95% clean before adding in the chemicals to balance the water. You want to test your pH levels and make sure that they are on the low end between 7.2-7.4.
– 4. Shock the Pool: Once you have added the fresh water and are balancing the pool, your chlorine shock will be as effective as possible. Waiting to shock the pool until you get to this point will be much easier on the vinyl liner. With the pH level on the low end, the chlorine shock will be most effective.
