When you invest in a vinyl pool, most homeowners understand, like with any kind of pool, there are annual maintenance and care costs that come with the ownership. Eventually, your vinyl pool liner will need to be replaced. With this in mind, we at Metropolitan Pools would like to take the opportunity to discuss how long vinyl pool liners last.
What is the Lifespan of a Vinyl Pool Liner?
It can last for almost 35 years, as long as it’s not wood, if we’re talking about the structure of the pool. However, the liner itself will need to be replaced much earlier. A lifespan of about 5-9 years is what vinyl liners have, which can apply to both thick and thin liners, sadly. Keep in mind, a thicker liner should last longer, though if its lifespan will be much shorter if not maintained well or if installed haphazardly.
What is an Embossed Pool Liner?
Usually, consumers are given a choice to purchase embossed or non-embossed. Divots on the surface are featured on embossed liners. For lack of a better term, it has a squishy feeling. Making it a better option for longevity, non-embossed is the same thickness but has no divots. Though the economic choice is an embossed liner, it can easily be punctured simply by swimming with unkept toenails. It will last longer if it’s installed correctly and maintained, however, non-embossed liners are more expensive. It is ideal if you get 5-9 years from your vinyl pool liner in either case.
Vinyl Liner Pulling Away, Ripping & Other Problems
Thickness will inevitably come into play when purchasing a vinyl liner. The embossed liner, which is a bit thinner, is the less expensive option, as mentioned. And as we touched on, tearing is possible, but will otherwise last the aforementioned 5-9 years. A tree branch, a raggedy toenail, or even a pet’s claw or teeth can puncture the vinyl liner. The good news, that many punctures can be repaired, and you can put off replacing the liner, though it’s certainly not good for the longevity of the vinyl liner itself. The non-embossed, liner which is thicker, is the liner is more durable, but it’s also heavier. Because it is heavier which makes it more difficult to install, and more expensive, this liner is more durable. The challenges at installation for the thicker liner makes the process of smoothing out wrinkles and getting corners “just right” harder. It could leave an air space leading to dry rot if the corners aren’t fitted properly. Once the dry rot sets in, the liner is done for.
Vinyl Pool Liner Warranty
The best news is that most vinyl pool liners have a warranty, and some are good for are even 25-30 years. It is important however, that you read the fine print. The warranties you will find are prorated in most cases, which means it will lose value each year. If something happens in year 4, you might be covered but less likely if something happens in year 7. Make a note of the things it doesn’t cover like the labor cost to fix the pool as well.
