The signs of the dropping temperature helps remind homeowners that it is time to winterize their pools. There are a few steps pool owners need to take to help protect their pool during the cold winter season. When Should You Winterize Your Pool?

It can be a bit tricky to know when to winterize your pool, especially for those pools with a water heating system. However, a good rule to follow is when the temperature remains 65 degrees or lower, this is when you should winterize your pool. You do not want to start too early as the heat of warmer temperatures can aid in the development of algae in the pool. However, you will want to make sure you are ready for the process when the time comes.

How Do I Winterize My Swimming Pool?

Step 1. Removal of Pool Accessories – When the time comes to winterize your pool, you will start by removing all of the pool accessories. This can include the pool skimmer basket, ladders, solar blankets and cleaners. Make sure to hose off the pool accessories and let them fully dry before putting them in storage.
Step 2. Deep Pool Cleaning – Part of winterizing a pool is that you will want to cover the top of the pool. To prepare the pool to be covered you will want to make sure that it is deeply cleaned first. You will want to make sure all of the leaves and other debris is removed. Afterward, you will want to have the sides and floor of the pool brushed off. Use the pool vacuum to suck up all of the dirt and particles that came off the sides and bottom of the pool.
Step 3. Check Chemical Levels – Next, you will want to make sure your pool is properly and chemically balanced. You will want to test your pool water chemicals. Here are the ideal readings for winterizing a pool:
• Alkalinity 80 to 150 parts per million (ppm)
• pH Level between 7.2 to 7.6
• Calcium Hardness Level between 175 to 225 ppm
• Chlorine Level between 1 ppm to 3 ppm
If your pool chemicals do not fall in the ideal range, you will want to make the proper adjustment before you winterize the pool. If the readings are slightly higher than ideal, this is okay as they will lower over the winter.
Step 4. Lower Water Level and Store Equipment – When winterizing a pool, often you will not run the skimmer. You will want to allow the water level to drop about 6 inches below the skimmer. To prevent ice from expanding and damaging your pool filtering system, you will want to unplug them and store them during the winter. Make sure that pool equipment is cleaned and put in a safe place during winter.
Step 5. Cover the Pool – You can now finally cover your pool for winter. Make sure the pool cover fits properly and is properly installed over the pool. The cover will help prevent pests and debris from getting inside your pool.
