Can Lots of Rain Cause Algae in Pool? How Does Weather Affect Water?

Spring: At the beginning of spring, homeowner are often busy getting their pool ready. Spring itself may not have a lot of effects on the pool. However, during the spring you will need to remove all of the dirt and debris inside the pool. Next, the pH value will need to be adjusted as well as the chlorine levels. The pool will need to be checked regularly to ensure contaminates do not develop with the warming weather.
Heavy Rains: Ohio’s heavy rain season starts in May and lasts through August. During periods of heavy rainfall, the rain water can affect the quality of the water. After a major rain storm it is important to check the chemical balance of the pool. Often chemicals will need to be added to prevent bacteria from developing. Additionally, rain has a way of pulling dirt and debris into the pool, which also needs to be cleaned.
UV Light Exposure: Sunlight or it UV rays will break down chlorine faster. This means during long summer days you will need to check the level of chemicals more often. You will probably need to add chlorine more frequently. UV light also promotes the development of algae, which is a major battle during the summer season.
Extended Hot Temperatures: Summer seems to be lasting longer which means your pool will be exposed to longer periods of hot temperatures. Because of the extended hot weather, the pool water will evaporate more quickly which means you will need to add water to the pool. However, after adding water to the pool you will need to check and re-balance your pool chemicals. Again, longer periods of heat will encourage algae to develop in your pool as well. Make sure during the warmer weather to check your pool often.
Severe Storms: Intense storms that includes wind, hail and lightning will affect your pool. Hail and lightning can damage pool plumbing and other equipment. Wind can carry dirt and debris that can enter the pool and affect the quality of the pool water. Often after a major storm, adjustments will be needed to ensure your pool care and water quality.
Autumn: In autumn you may only have a few short weeks left to swim in your pool. However, many people are beginning to winterize their pools. During the autumn, your pool will need to be prepared for winter which often involves a deep pool cleaning, balancing of chemicals, and covering the pool.
Winter: During the winter, the pool should be covered and protected and will need little maintenance. During the winter it is recommended to leave the water circulating to prevent ice from developing inside the pipes. Not to mention the water will be kept clean through the winter season. Ideally, you will want to prevent ice from damaging you pool plumbing and other systems. You may need to insulate exposed pipe to prevent them from icing up.
